Spring 2010 Poster, designed by George Brouwer

Statement by George Brouwer:
The image in this poster was generated with Processing, a programming language that allows artists to create form through code. It is produced by a system that seeks to implement Steve Reich's directions for Pendulum Music in a virtual space. I was interested to see how a set of directions and parameters intended to create a sound composition could be manipulated to produce an image instead.

Three objects of type Receiver are suspended then released above one object of type Sender. Each Receiver object contains directions for broadcasting a signal to the Sender, which in turn broadcasts that signal back to each Receiver, creating a phasing feedback loop. The poster contains three iterations of this simulation, each with a slightly altered "drop position" for each Receiver. Time is visualized along the y axis from the top of the page to the bottom, with the position and amplitude of a given signal represented by the position and thickness of its stroke respectively. Represented by the straight line traveling down the page, the position of the Sender does not change. Each Receiver exhibits pendulum motion, slowly converging as gravity and friction take hold of its momentum. As the Receivers settle upon the Sender, the feedback swells, until it eventually reaches an amplitude of infinity.
